Learn, Change Learn.

Over the last few months I have been busy writing my new book about the state of the economy. Hopefully most of you are aware of the how the economy is going. To be successful in life you have to stay up to date with the latest information, otherwise you will be caught of guard and could lose everything.

I know that I want to be lazy. I would simply like to win millions of dollars and retire to my dream destination. However, life is not like that. In life if we want to have to all the things we desire we have to work for them. We need to get off our backsides and put in the effort.

Fortunately, not everything you have to do require hard labor. In fact, the most important thing you need to do is learn. I know I have spoken about learning before in this blog. That was learning about what to do and how to do it to be successful. The learning I am discussing today is about how to stay successful.

The world changes everyday. In fact, in the modern world things are changing faster and faster each day. You need to stay on top of what is going on. If you don't, things will change around you and then you will have to either play catch up, or you could lose everything.

Let's take Nokia as an example. It is widely known that Nokia use to make paper. However, someone in their company realized that the next big thing to take the world by storm were mobile phones. From the late 80's right through to the mid 00's Nokia were the king of the phone business. Unfortunately they took their eyes of what was going n around them.

In 2007 the first iPhone hit the market and it was a runaway success. Being a touch screen phone people jumped at it. It could do more than a standard phone and it allowed people to carry a computer in their pocket.

Nokia scoffed at the idea of touch screen phones and saw it as only a fad. They believed that people would still want the traditional phone. They believed that they were number one and no one was going to usurp them.

Within a year Apple were number one. Nokia then tried to bring out their own devices, but now they were facing serious competition by not only Apple but Samsung as well. They believed brand loyalty would keep them going, they were wrong.

In 2013 now at the bottom of the market, Nokia sold out to Microsoft. Apple had come along and unceremoniously dethroned the king and took the crown for themselves. All because they didn't keep on learning and staying up to date.

Nokia are, of course, only one story. There our thousands, if not millions of people and business out there that have lost everything because they though that once they had everything that was all they had to do. They became blind to change and arrogant about their success.

It doesn't matter if your are rich or trying to get there. Stock markets change daily, housing prices go up and down, as do the rents they bring in. You have to keep watching them, learn what is going on and take the steps required to ensure you continue to earn your money.

If you are trying to be a top athlete you have to stay up to date with who is coming into your field, the changes in equipment and training. The top athletes in the world don't just play the game, they live it, staying up to date with everything that is going on.

The same can be said for business. New competitors, new markets, new ways of doing business happen everyday. In the new world you need to be up to date to take advantage and stay on top.

And the reality of it is, you not only have to do this every day, you need to do it for the rest of your life. You need to be prepared to take control and keep on learning, right up to the day you die.

Of course there is an easier way. You can just stop trying. You can be average, just like most other people. You can say good bye to your dreams and live you life saying "if only".

I refuse to do that, and if you are reading this, then I know that you refuse to do that was well.

So how are we going to keep learning everyday. First you need to stay up to date with news that effects what you are doing. Get an app on your mobile device that brings you the news. Read it, assess the information and then make a decision on what you need to do.

Second, get advisers. You can not be an expert at everything. So grab people that are good at what they do and get them working for you. I have an accountant, bookkeeper and mortgage broker. They love their jobs and they can stay up to date in their professions. So I don't have to learn everything and keep up to date, they do that part for me.

Finally be passionate about what you are doing. The more you love it them more time and effort you will put into it. Before you know it you will be an expert at it and hopefully you will remain successful for the rest of your life.

The NEW book Crashing Through! will be out soon. Stay tuned either here on this blog, or over at www.terryshadwell.com
